How Fresh Are Your Worms?
Hooking Your Worm
Hooking a worm is different to a maggot or a caster. The thing about a worm is it is the action that attracts the fish along with the juice they have. So the point is not to hook it so many times that it is an inactive lump of worm matter. Hooking your worm along with a maggot or two or with a caster can also be a lethal combination. Hook your maggot first then ad your worm a lovely cocktail.
Got Worms? Name That Worm Type?
Worms wriggley and wonderful to catch fish with and reasonably cheap too and chop them in half and you have two for the price of one! There are three different types of worm.
The lobworm this is the big fat one you find in the garden. Lobworms are easily kept, keep them either in the soil you found them in, in some damp grass cuttings or some moss all are fine and will keep your lobby in good condition.
The Brandlings these have a red skin and a set of yellow rings around their bodies they don't grow as big as the lobby but are just as effective. Their juice is yellow off putting forthe angler but fish love it!
The final set of worms are the redworms which are the smallest of the three and are similar to the brandlings but without the yellow rings. These worms are excellent attractors and are frequently chopped and added to ground bait to attract fish to your swim.
A fresh worm will be fat juicey and very active the more active it is the fresher it is and the fatter it is the more worm juice there will be to entice the fish.
Storing Your Worms
Storing worms is easy leave them in the garden as long as possible and coax them out at the last possible moment before use. However to store them and keeping them fresh is an easy matter.
Put them in a box a well ventilated box and add either grass cuttings shredded newspaper or even soil. By using the grass cutting method this will not only clean your worms but also toughens their skin. Tough skin has a two fold advantage the fish love a bit of tough worm skin and it helps the worm stay on the hook better. From here its a case of ensuring your worms are kept damp but not wet. Wet worms are never a nice thing where as a damp worm is a good worm.
